The Fujifilm Instax Share SP-3 is another portable printer designed for photos. It essentially turns your smartphone into a retro instant camera, like a Polaroid, with the Fujifilm Instax Share SP-3 printing out photos on square printouts. Rather than using an instant camera, just send your photos from your via to the printer via a wireless connection and the Instax Share app. It’s small enough to be carried around easily and the rechargeable battery lasts a good while. Print media is costly, however, and it’s only good for printing retro-inspired photos. If you need a portable printer for documents as well, the Canon PIXMA iP110 (above) is a better choice.

Normal processes like checking email, going through social media, messaging, and requesting an Uber ride showed no issues. Of course, you won’t get the smoothness of a Snapdragon 845 when scrolling and opening apps, but the Unihertz Atom takes on every casual task with no hiccups. Once again, it’s usable. You wouldn’t expect much else from any device at this price point.

As befits a potentially game-changing and technologically-complex device, the Tricorder concept had caught Google’s eye. Back in 2014, the head of life sciences at what was then Google X, the company’s moonshot division, announced a cancer-detection system that would lay the foundations for the creation of a Tricorder. The system that Dr Andrew Conrad announced aimed to use magnetic nanoparticles that would attach themselves to cancer particles; a separate wrist-worn device would measure the particles to detect cancer. The system would over time form part of a real-life Tricorder, Conrad said.

Butterfly Network, a startup co-founded by MIT alumnus Nevada Sanchez ’10, SM ’11, has developed a low-cost, handheld scanner that generates clinical-quality ultrasounds on a smartphone. Ultrasounds are uploaded to the cloud, where any expert with permission can give second opinions or help analyze images.

By winning the prize, the inventors — a group of siblings and others led by Philadelphia-based emergency room physician Basil Harris — received a $2.6m grant to help take the DxtER from concept to commercialisation.

The dynaEdge PC can also be used as a traditional Windows 10 Pro desktop by connecting it to a standard display.

Apart from barcodes, the tool also supports the following content types: URL, Windows Store URL, contact information and business cards (vCard, meCard, bizCard), email messages, SMS, WiFi, and SEPA Credit Transfer (Giro Code).

The front-facing sensor is 13MP with an f/2.2 aperture, which frankly seems overkill for selfies. On the rear are two sensors with the primary one being a Sony 16MP and the secondary a 2MP effort.

The keyboard does have its quirks, such as the Fn key in the bottom left corner instead of Ctrl, something I had to almost immediately switch round in settings for muscle-memory cut and paste. There aren’t any media keys either.

The takeaway of the component overview is that the guts are relatively basic, but the Surface Go still offers a solid spec baseline for the price. As a Windows 10 system, the Surface Go will be able to run all of your standard Windows programs (Microsoft Office, the desktop version of Spotify, and the like), and should be able to do so without straining itself given the components.
