In less specialized use, I found the Surface Go pleasant to tote. I hardly notice it in the crook of my arm or one hand while buzzing around our office and taking it on the train. It shines in any of these on-the-go circumstances, so if you find yourself hopping from meeting to meeting and spending a lot of time away from your desk, this may be a great partner. On a larger scale, the low cost may be especially well suited to the bulk-purchase scenarios I mentioned.
The Unihertz Atom is a phone you don’t really want to keep using, but that is the whole point of it. You do what you have to do and get on with your life. It is nonaddictive by nature.
I got a chance to check out a few pre-release units at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and it really does seem like Planet Computer has delivered on most of its promises. The little computer dual boots Google Android 7.1 and Debian Linux. It has a keyboard that’s a little cramped, but which is pretty responsive… and familiar to anyone who’s ever used an old Psion handheld. Planet Computer hired the designer of the Psion Revo and Series 5 keyboard to help design the Gemini PDA.

In terms of performance, the Unihertz Atom is an affordable mid-range handset. It costs $259.99 and operates just like a phone at that price range should. Its octa-core processor and 4GB of RAM keep it running smoothly as long as you don’t go nuts with it.
The prize, launched in 2011, was won last year by Basil Leaf Technologies with a device called DxtER, a small unit with a range of specific medical peripherals, including a sensor for heart and lung sounds, an ECG monitor for measuring heart rate and rhythm, and a device for analysing blood glucose and white cell count, a sign of infection and inflammation when raised.
