ATLANTA, Dec. 04, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — UPS (NYSE:UPS) today said it has integrated a new navigation tool called UPSNav into the handheld device its package delivery drivers carry, providing them with detailed turn-by-turn directions derived from UPS’s routing software. UPSNav reduces miles driven, fuel consumed and carbon emissions, while empowering the company to provide better service to its customers.

Bryan Boatner, director of product marketing for Cognex, agrees, especially with the imminent approach of peak season that will require rapid onboarding for temporary staff. Using “sleds” that grant scanning capabilities and ruggedness to the latest consumer devices, managers can deploy familiar technology while leveraging tools to manage those devices and achieve visibility into hardware that runs different versions of firmware or operating systems.

But Palm’s “phone companion” pitch quickly breaks down for exactly the same reason most people don’t have separate workday and weekend rides: Cost. The Palm is $349.99, then you have to pay Verizon every month to keep it on your plan. Even if the idea of a smartphone sidekick is appealing, that pricing is going to be prohibitive for a lot of people — though you have to begrudgingly respect the tech industry’s brazen attempt at getting people to buy not one but two smartphones. And while the Palm is a welcome experiment in a generally snoozy gadget category, it’s not likely to become a massive hit, even with a celeb endorsement from Stephen Curry.

Traceability of ones and zeroes is great, but the latest scanners can capture image-based data about the quality of the product and the process.

After messing around on Windows 10 S for a short period (which largely feels the same as full Windows 10), I was forced to make my one-time switch. Our benchmarking software consists of multiple full Windows programs, and these could not install on Windows 10 S, so I had no choice but to convert. If you attempt to install full applications, a prompt appears suggesting you make the jump and directs you to the Windows Store to transfer with just a few clicks.

The real question is whether people will make a bit of room for this phone in their pockets, or if it’s just a cool novelty we only want at first.

On the outside, the Armor 6 has a a rather decent looking chassis featuring a die cast frame covered with protective rubber and red or grey metallic inlays. The enclosure is rated to handle drops from 1.2 meters, submersion into water (up to 1.5 meters for up to 60 minutes), thermal shocks, corrosive environments, and so on. Meanwhile, framing a 6.2-inch 2246×1080 LCD display protected using Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5, the Armor 6 is generally pretty large and heavy: it is 160 mm tall, 13.3 mm thick, and weighs 228 grams. All of which makes the Armor 6 a lot larger than standard consumer smartphones, but is fairly typical for this market segment.

If you can’t take a few decent holiday pictures with this hardware, then you’re not trying very hard at all.

Consider the consumerization of blood-pressure monitors and defibrillators, he says: “Those started in doctors’ offices and are now in people’s homes. In the next few years, we’ll work with the FDA, so anyone who wants a window into the human body can have it.”

In short: the Palm Phone is better, mostly because of design and the much better screen. I would gladly pay the extra $90 (plus $10 extra monthly fee) for it if I wanted a secondary phone and was with Verizon.  Those that don’t fit the requirements can go with the next best thing in tiny smartphones: the Unihertz Atom.
