Apple should be worried about the Surface Book 2. The keyboard is solid, the trackpad feels as responsive as the MacBook Pro, and the hardware looks and feels premium. Microsoft has given users a good set of reasons to jump ship, but in the cloud-connected world of today, the jump is perhaps more dramatic than it would have been back in Steve Jobs’ day. The Game Boy’s portability was a major part of its success, but we doubt Nintendo thought it could be this portable. In 1993, Aleksandr Serebrov took his Game Boy with him into space. Its PCMark 8 Work Conventional test is on the low side for modern systems, and it didn’t match up too well against some of the competition. As mentioned, the Surface Go’s target size and cost means a relatively modest internal-component offering. With no room for much cooling, the low-wattage CPU is a necessary choice, and it fits the general design concept and purpose of the Go. All of this is to say you shouldn’t expect blistering speeds, and indeed, it performed modestly on our benchmark tests.

The Palm looks useful enough: It get calls and texts, it has front- and rear-facing cameras, and it runs apps like Spotify via the Google Play store. It’s small enough to easily toss in your purse for a night out or in your gym bag for a quick workout. Palm wants you to think of it as the Mazda Miata you take out for weekend drives rather than the Ford Escape that gets you to and from work every day. “Palm isn’t a replacement for your primary smartphone, it’s a fully connected companion that is in-sync with your primary device, making mobile truly mobile again,” reads Palm’s website. As the benchmarks revealed, the processor in this phone just doesn’t have the performance needed to drive it effectively.
