Sprint’s early surge WASHINGTON-Sprint Spectrum L.P., which began offering personal communications service in Washington a year ago through partner American Personal Communications, has converted its marketing from a big-bang effort to one resembling a continuous rumble. During the last 13 months, the carrier has attracted more than 100,000 subscribers (July 1996 figures); has nearly doubled its cell sites (from 264 to 414); and has won a first-place J.D. Power and Associates award for customer service, call quality and price seven months into its existence. Mirroring its initial plunge into the marketplace during last year’s holiday season, Sprint Spectrum this year has been running major print ads in cooperation with its retail partners and has offered a $99 phone. Retail outlets handling the Sprint Spectrum phones and service have doubled since last year-to 400-cutting an even larger customer-recognition swathe this season. With increased training and advertising provided by Sprint Spectrum, and word-of-mouth testimonials provided by friends and relatives who are subscribers, retail workers are having an even easier time this year promoting the shrink-wrapped phones in a box. … Read more
On June 10, Windows Embedded CE 6.0 will no longer be supported, followed by Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld on June 9, 2019 and Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 on January 14, 2020. Marco Nielsen, vice president of managed mobility services at Stratix, says there is still time for last-minute, business-critical steps to ensure business continuity and minimize cost of the transition to a new operating system.
Enter Sanchez. After earning two bachelor’s degrees from MIT in electrical engineering and computer science and in mathematics, Sanchez was working in Tegmark’s lab. Rothberg and Sanchez met and founded Butterfly Network in 2011, and Sanchez then began the arduous task of integrating transducers directly onto chips. For help, the startup hired as chief technology officer Keith Fife ’98, SM ’99, who had helped design the DNA-sequencing chips for Ion Torrent.
● Handheld AR is used by looking at one’s surroundings through a mobile device. Although it gained popularity through mobile phone games and the ability to identify plants, animals, and landmarks (through the use of Google Lens), handheld AR has proven useful in business by allowing customers to accurately visualize the placement of products in specific environments.
To avoid “trying to boil the ocean” or adversely impacting business, Nielsen offered tips for a proactive strategy. Firstly, it’s important to make sure both production and IT folks are aware if their devices are facing end of life, since it can be turned into an opportunity to unlock other possibilities such as an upgrade to wireless infrastructure.
For large, complex DCs with heavy automation, the software to drive processes, workflows and tasks in that environment is overkill for many SMBs. Now some vendors provide solutions for only that sector, Stubbs says, and even the larger software players have developed more scalable versions.
One of the things that’s sacrificed in most PC tablets is battery life. Lenovo quotes “more-than-all-day” battery life of nine-and-a-half hours, but the reality is the ThinkPad X1 Tablet lasts only around seven hours between charges. That was with the “Better battery life” power setting active, word processing in Typora, browsing in Chrome, using Nextgen reader, some image editing in Affinity Photo and lots of email in Microsoft Mail.
Great screen, robust design, brilliant keyboard and Thunderbolt 3 make the third-generation ThinkPad X1 Tablet a potent combination
Benchmarks aren’t a perfect measure of how a given smartphone or any other electronic will perform under real-world circumstances but they do serve as a good baseline. The results from GeekBench 4 for the WP1 were, as might be expected, not too encouraging from a performance perspective. Instead, they showed a handset standing in the middle between high-dollar flagships and the budget-focused low-end of the Android spectrum — leaning more toward the budget side. That’s not necessarily a problem since this OUKITEL smartphone is meant to be competent at nearly any task but more specifically for those that need a rugged phone with a big battery. That’s where the benchmarks really shine through, showing just a minute shy of 7-hours screen-on time. That’s with auto-dimming turned off, screen brightness at the maximum level, no battery savings turned on, and internal components pushing to just under 80-percent of their maximum capacity. That’s impressive in spite of the highest scores posted to the benchmark by flagships because, in most cases, those tests show devices with those battery life extenders activated.
