We don’t know exactly how many Chinese phone makers are out there, but there’s a lot of them, that’s for sure. Today, we’ll be looking at a handset from Ulefone, one of the bigger phone makers in that region, with a large selection of models.

The entire OS is present as well as all of the expected UI but scaled way down to the point where things can be a bit difficult to read if the font size is set too small. It will be a challenge for older users or those who may be visually impaired to use this handset. Thankfully, Android’s easy-to-read icons help out with the navigation side of things. The virtual keyboard is actually surprisingly easy to type with despite that a single finger can easily cover more than three of the digital keys. That’s without even using swipe inputs. Although that option would likely improve things further, typing was accurate enough that we didn’t feel the need to ever turn that on. That’s not to say it’s at all perfect. We did manage to bungle putting in a password or three upon first use but several log-ins later errors stopped happening with any noticeable frequency. All of the expected Google software and stock tools such as a clock and file manager are present.

Buyers of these models will have a free but one-way (i.e., irrevocable) option through the Windows Store to switch from Windows 10 S mode to Windows 10 Home. So, in short, you will get a full version of Windows 10 in either buying scenario. You will just have to activate it, if you want it, on the consumer versions of the Surface Go, and you can’t go back to Windows 10 S if you do.

The Unihertz Atom is a tiny phone with a 2.45-inch display. It comes with decent specs, but the phone’s design is what’s really going to spark conversations. About 80 percent of the people I showed this phone to told me they totally wanted one.

I am not saying Unihertz should throw a state of the art camera on a $259.99 phone, but this device is meant for adventures. More attention should have been paid to the camera.

But Palm’s “phone companion” pitch quickly breaks down for exactly the same reason most people don’t have separate workday and weekend rides: Cost. The Palm is $349.99, then you have to pay Verizon every month to keep it on your plan. Even if the idea of a smartphone sidekick is appealing, that pricing is going to be prohibitive for a lot of people — though you have to begrudgingly respect the tech industry’s brazen attempt at getting people to buy not one but two smartphones. And while the Palm is a welcome experiment in a generally snoozy gadget category, it’s not likely to become a massive hit, even with a celeb endorsement from Stephen Curry.

Microsoft bowed to the reality that enterprises won’t purge Windows 7 by its January 2020 retirement, and has announced it will sell extended support for three years past that deadline.

If you intend to watch many movies, then maybe you should consider a bigger phablet or ideally a tablet. But for general use, the resolution of this phone isn’t a significant problem.

Its PCMark 8 Work Conventional test is on the low side for modern systems, and it didn’t match up too well against some of the competition. (It should be noted, though, that having a higher screen resolution hurts this score, and the Lenovo Flex 6 11, for example, only offers a 720p display). I included both the Miix 320 and the more expensive Lenovo Miix 520 for comparison since the Surface Go’s price can scale closer to either of them depending on the SKU and keyboard.
