Normal processes like checking email, going through social media, messaging, and requesting an Uber ride showed no issues. Of course, you won’t get the smoothness of a Snapdragon 845 when scrolling and opening apps, but the Unihertz Atom takes on every casual task with no hiccups. Once again, it’s usable. You wouldn’t expect much else from any device at this price point.

In terms of design, as alluded to above, all of the edges and cornering is smooth and wide making the Unihertz Atom surprisingly easy to hold onto. What’s more, a lanyard slot is built right into the frame so that the device can be worn around one’s wrist or neck. The contours and material are grippy and give a good in-hand feel while the texturing on the red PTT button assist in finding the proper key to press under any given circumstance. For aesthetics, the Atom could be described as having an adorable — albeit rugged — charm. Only one color is available but the manufacturer made sure to include a red accent line that steps back from the garish oranges and yellows used on similarly hardcore handsets. All ports and jacks are open as well and that means that Unihertz went further still to ensure that waterproofing isn’t just enabled by difficult to manage rubber flaps. That makes plugging the device in, accessing SIM cards, or listening to music via headphones a much less daunting task without taking away from endurance.

What need is there for a barcode scanner on a modern smartphone that already has its own 16MP camera? This hardware is designed and optimized specifically for barcode scanning in a way that smartphone cameras are not. The module contains three windows for an illumination light (there’s nothing worse than a dimly lit barcode, right?), a laser to help you target, and the camera itself. It’s a compact module that makes the handheld scanners at retail stores look positively obese. In HP’s demonstrations, the scanner was incredibly fast — you just hold the button on the side of the case to activate the scanner, point it at your barcode, and *beep* you’re scanning.

“You can be quite nimble as you’re moving around the object and trying to capture all these different details,” he says. “Whereas on the laser system, each time that you have to get a different angle, you have to move the head away from the object. Then you have to rotate the head to a specific angle and move it back into place. So it’s not nearly as efficient.

Microsoft is working with a growing number of service providers to give its users a more seamless method to authenticate multiple accounts of importance with Windows Hello. In short: the Palm Phone is better, mostly because of design and the much better screen. I would gladly pay the extra $90 (plus $10 extra monthly fee) for it if I wanted a secondary phone and was with Verizon.  Those that don’t fit the requirements can go with the next best thing in tiny smartphones: the Unihertz Atom.
