Run the ARM-specific version of the Geekbench benchmark for example, and you’ll see that performance is about twice as high as you’d get from the x86-version of Geekbench, which requires emulation to run.

Like many of Nintendo’s products, the Game Boy’s simple exterior and interface belied a great versatility. The little device was capable of doing far more than just play games. Part of this was due to Game Boy designer Gunpei Yokoi’s philosophy of "Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology", or using old technology in new ways. Because the Game Boy was built off of somewhat outdated tech, it was adaptable in ways more advanced devices couldn’t be. This led to a proliferation of oddball accessories, modifications, and attempts to turn the humble Game Boy into something resembling a modern smartphone.

"Most of the technologies that exist out there we can turn into something we can put into the patient’s hands, I think that [the challenge] is more about shrinking the technologies that exist. A lot of the things that a physician can do in a regular exam room we put in a Tricorder. Labs and radiology — that’s the difficult thing to shrink down into a Tricorder," Basil Leaf Technologies’ Charron says.
That technology is packaged in a slim – at least by waterproof phone standards – polycarbonate and aluminum shell that looks and feels much more expensive than it is.
So, yeah, performance will be an issue for some people, but they’re not this product’s target audience, so that’s okay. The product might fail — it’s a tough monopoly to break — but I for one am glad they’re trying something new.
Handily, scientists are also working on expanding the capabilities of Tricorder-like devices. Earlier this year, researchers from the University of Glasgow created a handheld sensor device based on a CMOS chip that can analyse a number of metabolites in blood or urine, analysing them to diagnose conditions including heart attacks.

After several iterations, Sanchez, Fife, and Chen found a way to integrate stacks of capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers — basically, metal plates suspended between two electrodes — directly on a chip. (These devices function like crystal transducers.) From this, they created chips with roughly 9,000 transducer channels that, combined with electronics, could send out and receive sound waves and turn those waves into 3-D ultrasound images. Today, the computation power of each chip is extraordinary, Sanchez says: “Essentially, it has almost half a trillion operations per second behind it to swallow data to get ultrasound in and image out in real time.”
