Handhelds were seen as something of a novelty back in the early 90s. There hadn’t been a dedicated handheld console like the Game Boy before. Most handhelds were simple and cheap, only playing a single game. Nintendo wanted to make the transition as seamless as possible. For that reason, the Game Boy has the same control scheme as the NES controller. A D-pad, an A & B button, and start and select buttons. The idea was that veteran NES Players could pick up Game Boys and play no problem. Given the Game Boy’s success, I’d say it worked.

One aspect we couldn’t test in practical terms was the IP68/IP69K rating. To achieve IP68 a phone must handle being submerged in a meter of water for 30 minutes. The Armor 3 goes much further than that, handling twice that depth for up to two hours!

It’s unfortunately a relatively big price jump to get this SSD-equipped model, but RAM is pricey these days and SSD is simply not inexpensive technology. The storage capacity takes a nice bump, though, so you can also store more files and your system will load faster. A 128GB drive isn’t a ton of storage, but for the types of tasks the Surface Go is built for, it’s a fitting capacity. On the whole, I think the $399 price point of the Surface Go is one of the stronger selling points, so there’s less head-turning value in hearing "$550 Surface." But the speedier storage and more-standard amount of memory are undeniably nice to have if you’ll also lean on this machine as a frequent work companion.

Cubot only claims IP68 certification and nothing else. That covers submersion in water for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5m, which is enough to avoid a beach calamity, but probably not white-water rafting or diving.

I suspect folks who just view one website at a time or just use the computer for writing, watching videos, or performing other one-at-a-time tasks will both find the computer to be more responsive and to offer longer battery life. But in my tests, about 10-12 hours of continuous usage seems pretty typical.

On the hardware front, Unihertz has done an exceptional job ensuring this smartphone will be durable. That’s due in large part to the size of this gadget. To begin with, it is noticeably thicker than other smartphones but not to such a degree that it’s difficult to hold. A fair amount of that heft is because the components have been squeezed into such a small frame but also because the outer protective coating is so thick. The panels, edges, and corners feature extra grip to make it more difficult to drop too. Meanwhile, the small screen size and use of an unspecified version of Gorilla Glass mean that there’s not enough surface area to really bend or twist. The entire build brings to mind the original candy-bar style Nokias from the 1990s and early-2000s. It really does just feel indestructible because of how compact everything is and might even pose as much a risk to bare feet as a Lego brick if the company had used harder materials and sharper edges.
