It was a long-anticipated move… and one that, by all accounts seems to be a work in progress at the moment. Still, when Asus offered me the chance to test one of the first Windows 10 on ARM devices, I jumped at the opportunity.

On the back is a solid-feeling kickstand with a wide angle of motion, which is just as good as that on the back of the Surface Pro, and perfect for getting the right angle on your lap or desk.

I averaged about three hours of screen-on time. Overall the phone would last me all day on a single charge. By the time I went to sleep the phone was under the 20 percent mark, and I wasn’t even using it that much. Battery life is generally OK, but I expected more.

Putting aside the specific professional use cases and bulk-purchase scenarios addressed earlier on, someone who travels a lot on aircraft will find plenty of use for the Surface Go. It won’t take up much room in a carry-on bag, it fits on a tray table just right (especially minus the detachable keyboard), and even though the arrangement is not ideal, it can be used on your lap.

The mini smartphone now has a rugged design that should make it more resistant to the daily beating some of us give our handsets. The Unihertz Atom feels sturdier and more solid than its predecessor, but it is also thicker and bulkier at 96 x 45 x 18mm. I wouldn’t say that’s necessarily a problem — the phone still feels tiny.

It looks kind of like a toy, but it doesn’t feel like one. The rubberized plastic, textured back, and shock-absorbing corners are comfortable to hold and feel secure. It isn’t even a bit slippery! I wasn’t as worried about dropping it (never did), and its IP68 certification means exposing it to the elements shouldn’t be an issue either.

DJI are also offering a range of accessories to work alongside the Osmo Pocket, including an underwater case that will allow users to dive with the camera to a depth of 60 meters.

de Cosson opts for a handheld white structured light scanner for lower-resolution scans of objects that are larger than a cubic foot, yet smaller than unwieldy parts like a door panel. Like other structured light systems, the handheld device rapidly flashes a known pattern using white LEDs across the object’s surface; depth and surface information is calculated based on how the pattern deforms over the object’s surface and is stored as a point cloud. After post-processing, the model can be exported as an STL or another similar file type. The end result is a quick, relatively inexpensive scan. Garant has the Artec Eva, which features a scanning resolution up to 500 microns and a 3D point accuracy of 100 microns.

Our advice would be that you shouldn’t panic if the phone gets wet or dusty. But conversely, it probably isn’t prudent to explore the practical limits of its environmental protection.

It cannot use x86 drivers. While Windows 10 on ARM can run x86 Windows applications, it cannot utilize x86 drivers. Instead, it will require native ARM64 drivers instead. This means that hardware support will be much more limited than is the case with mainstream Windows 10 versions. In other words, it will likely work much like Windows 10 S does today.
