Ulefone this week introduced its new high-end shockproof and waterproof smartphone. Dubbed the Rugger Armor 6, the ruggized phone combines an IP68-rated chassis, a large display, multiple special-purpose sensors, and a high-performance SoC. Clearly keying in on a specific market segment for the new phone, the Armor 6 will also ship with multiple pre-loaded applications that are intended to be useful during traveling or just in various harsh locales.

Though I have similar reservations about the investment versus the benefit for schools, I think the Surface Go is a more powerful tool for this scenario. Running a full PC operating system with more power gives schools options for what to run on these devices. They’re also small enough for younger children to handle, and the integrated touch interface, especially in Windows 10 S, is appealing (as opposed to on chromebooks, which often lack touch). Younger kids may be more prone to damaging a non-rugged device like this one, but given that Microsoft is aiming for this audience, the Surface Go should be able to withstand some wear and tear.

From a feature perspective, the P8 has an impressive selection of sensors and their associated technologies. It sports a GPS, geomagnetic sensor, gravity sensor, gyroscope, proximity sensor and light level sensing.

The Ulefone X2 is the company’s entry-level rugged smartphone, and it supports 3G connectivity. It is easy to notice that the Armor X2 is a rugged smartphone, its design reveals that. The phone has three capacitive buttons below the display, overview, home, and back buttons, while it is made mostly out of metal, and it has some sort of rubber-like material on the back in order to be more grippy. This smartphone comes with two vertically-aligned cameras on the back, while it has a side-facing fingerprint scanner. The phone includes a 5,500mAh battery on the inside, which is one of its main selling points. Facial scanning is also included in the package, and the same can be said for an NFC chip. This smartphone is IP68 certified for water and dust resistance, which is to be expected considering it’s a rugged handset.
