●     Heads-up displays (HUDs) were originally used in fighter jets to increase a pilot’s situational                 awareness without having to shift his or her focus too greatly. Transparent displays that                           incorporate important data into a user’s standard field of vision, HUDs are now being incorporated         into the windshields of automobiles. HUDs can also be incorporated into the visor of a helmet.

The delivery app used with the scanners was conceived and programmed by the in-house team at Hermes. The centerpiece is a simply designed, multilingual interface that increases the ease-of-use compared to old devices.

The Palm looks useful enough: It get calls and texts, it has front- and rear-facing cameras, and it runs apps like Spotify via the Google Play store. It’s small enough to easily toss in your purse for a night out or in your gym bag for a quick workout. Palm wants you to think of it as the Mazda Miata you take out for weekend drives rather than the Ford Escape that gets you to and from work every day. “Palm isn’t a replacement for your primary smartphone, it’s a fully connected companion that is in-sync with your primary device, making mobile truly mobile again,” reads Palm’s website. (It’s also pitching the Palm as a way to help people “get out of their tech and into their lives,” but the solution to tech overload is rarely more tech — it’s better mastery of your settings and an occasional willingness to silence and ignore your phone.)

That brings us to a key point: the Windows 10 versions that will be deployed on Surface Go. With commercial versions of the Surface Go, Microsoft will be shipping Windows 10 Pro, with the option to lock the version to Windows 10 S, the version of Windows 10 that works solely with Windows Store apps and Windows 10 S-compatible accessories. Versions of the Surface Go sold to consumers, on the other hand, will ship with Windows 10 S active by default.

The approaching Windows end-of-life deadlines could signal disruptions in those businesses that have postponed the decision to migrate to a new mobile operating system.

On the hardware side, the device could also do with some refinement. There’s a weird wedge-shaped gap when the lid is closed due to the metal hinge, and while I don’t really care about it, practically everyone else I’ve shown the laptop to has pointed it out unprompted. The potential for bric-a-brac in my rucksack to mess up the screen means I’d have to keep it in a separate case. This is pretty much the only gripe I have on the hardware side, though, and that’s far better than having a dust-allergic keyboard.
