Like many of Nintendo’s products, the Game Boy’s simple exterior and interface belied a great versatility. The little device was capable of doing far more than just play games. Part of this was due to Game Boy designer Gunpei Yokoi’s philosophy of "Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology", or using old technology in new ways. Because the Game Boy was built off of somewhat outdated tech, it was adaptable in ways more advanced devices couldn’t be. This led to a proliferation of oddball accessories, modifications, and attempts to turn the humble Game Boy into something resembling a modern smartphone.

The Game Boy’s portability was a major part of its success, but we doubt Nintendo thought it could be this portable. In 1993, Aleksandr Serebrov took his Game Boy with him into space. He was on his way to the Mir space station and wanted something to do in his off time. Because of weight issues, Serebrov could only take one game. He chose Tetris, an appropriate game for the place and time. His Game Boy spent 196 days in space and orbited the Earth over 3000 times. It and Serebrov’s copy of Tetris were later sold at auction for $1220.

Marco taught me to keep a lookout not just for porch pirates—lowlifes who swoop in behind us to pilfer packages—but also for portable toilets. In neighborhoods miles from a service station or any public lavatory, a Port-a-John, or a Honey Pot, can be no less welcome than an oasis in the desert. (The afternoon I leapt from the van and beelined to a Honey Pot, only to find it padlocked, was the closest I’ve come to crying on the job.)

For any of the four options, practical concerns of micron resolution, speed, and data size are taken into consideration.
