The laser line scanner can be used in conjunction with the CMM’s touch probe. “Depending on the part’s geometry and if there are deep holes that cannot be accessed by the optical system, we can swap out the laser head for a touch probe. In this sense we are able to get the best of both worlds—a highly accurate and repeatable touch probe system and the speed of a light-based system. However, this is one of its major limitations, if the laser cannot see the feature to be measured then we cannot use the system.

If you are going to make the jump and purchase a keyboard, Microsoft offers a few options. A stock $99 Type Cover for Surface Go comes in black alone, while the spiffier $129 Signature Type Cover comes in platinum, burgundy, and cobalt shades. These are finished with a soft "Alcantara" fabric material, which has echoes of rich Corinthian leather but nonetheless feels nice to rest your wrists on. The black version, in contrast, is all-polyurethane.

Battery life from the Atom is about average thanks to its small screen and our benchmarks on that front lined up very well with real-world usage. That means that under constant use, it shouldn’t be difficult to get at least 5 to 6 hours of screen-on time between charges. Charging itself takes around 1.5 hours to accomplish. Now, it’s worth noting that our benchmark and use was under sub-optimal conditions since we left the screen brightness turned all the way up and all power-saving turned off. The benchmark also kept the internal hardware pegged at over 70-percent capacity for nearly the entire test. So anybody should be able to squeeze more out of this handset just by adjusting the settings. On standby, the Unihertz Atom lasted us between 2 to 4 days with intermittent use.. The benchmark for performance, on the other hand, was much less impressive but not surprising. The single-core score fell in at just 779 and the multi-core score at just 3687 via GeekBench’s measurements. That score wouldn’t be expected to allow the latest and greatest smartphone games or most intensive apps to run smoothly at all.

Another huge issue Unihertz should have given more thought to is typing. Even a seven-year old with skinny fingers had a hard time typing on this phone!

There are certain aspects of the OUKITEL WP1 that stray far from perfect. The camera, material used in the rear-panel, speakers, and fingerprint scanner could all stand to be improved. None of those is really a deal breaker either. The fingerprint scanner works but will be noticeably slower for those who have used the technology before. Meanwhile, cosmetic damage to the back plate isn’t likely as big a concern as real damage for those looking into purchasing this type of handset. The kinds of issues seen with the camera and speakers are at best easy to overcome and at worse a minor nuisance. In fact, the performance, features, and really almost everything about this handset is well-aligned with typical expectations for a device in the sub-$250 price range. On the other side of that coin, OUKITEL has really outdone itself to include wireless charging here and the WP1 is worth a look for anybody in the market for an affordable but rugged smartphone.

It makes sense! Phones can get addictive. It’s the same reason devices like the Palm Phone and connected smartwatches even exist. However, those still need to pair with a more capable device. The Unihertz Atom is an Android handset that can operate as your primary smartphone. With dual-SIM capabilities, it could even replace a couple handsets.

And, it’s spreading. The Tier 1 companies that are doing everything they can have moved through multiple generations of scanning, edge computing and Industry 4.0-style analytics. The big push now, according to Honeywell’s Stubbs, is adoption among small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

There’s also a microSD card reader, which is great, but it’s hidden in a sim-slot similar to that which you would find on a smartphone. It’s not practical as a hot-swappable memory card reader as you need a sim ejector tool to get it out, and it means ejecting the 4G sim if you’ve got one at the same time.
