CDMA by any other name LOS ANGELES-The CDMA Development Group has said it wants to create a single name for the Code Division Multiple Access family of products. Wireless local loop, cellular and personal communications services are based on the same specification, said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. “There’s an enormous scale for CDMA but many don’t realize it’s all the same specification … We would have something that describes the technology.” The name will not conflict with individual service brands, but could be used in conjunction with carriers’ brand names, said LaForge. The CDG is expected to select a name before next May when the group holds its next World Congress. Whether carriers would use the CDMA name as part of their product branding is speculative. Switching on the Surface Book for the first time makes you realize you’re in for a treat. Apple has long touted the benefits of having one company produce both the hardware and software, and it’s clear Microsoft has been listening. The facial recognition scanner takes a shot of your face, the whole setup process uses the microphones to register your voice, and the whole machine is ready to go with minimal effort. Again, the Surface line is meant to show other manufacturers what’s possible: face scanning forms part of Windows Hello, a feature that other companies can build into their own machines. Face recognition is fast and hassle-free, although it does mean having to stare intently at my laptop after opening it up.

As mentioned, the Surface Go’s target size and cost means a relatively modest internal-component offering. With no room for much cooling, the low-wattage CPU is a necessary choice, and it fits the general design concept and purpose of the Go. All of this is to say you shouldn’t expect blistering speeds, and indeed, it performed modestly on our benchmark tests.

Now, mind you, the flagship Surface Pro isn’t ideal used on your lap, either, but its wider body can fit across your legs much more naturally, even if you have to be careful not to move too suddenly while balancing the kickstand. With the Surface Go, the lesser body/kickstand width means you have to keep your legs close together, or else it will fall between them. That arrangement is serviceable on my lap for a quick session, but much less so for a long train ride, as it requires you to sit upright and still, and strain your neck a bit. And while the device is nicely made and feels sturdy, it’s not a ruggedized tablet you’ll feel comfortable seeing clatter to the floor.

With regard to specific features, OUKITEL includes all of the standard flash, HDR, filters, Panoramic mode, blurring (listed on this devices under “SLR”), and pro settings that are typically found in Android AOSP camera software. It’s worth noting that the blurring feature is not the same as a “bokeh” effect, as the software will accomplish that on its own. However, the company also splits the automation in "Beauty" for more manual control over adjustments. Some of those are, at least in name, somewhat disconcerting — such as the option to ‘whiten’ skin tone, enlarge eyes, or ‘slim’ down facial features. But it may be useful for some users who want more fine-tuned control over their selfies. Moving past that, this camera is capable of shooting up to 40-shots in rapid succession and that’s accompanied by the thoughtful addition of a feature allowing the volume keys to act as hardware-based shutter buttons in the settings menu.
