Arguably one of the biggest stimulants for building a Tricorder came when chipmaker Qualcomm sponsored the Tricorder XPRIZE, a competition intended to help foster the creation of innovative medical hardware.

That’s an interesting list and while it’s not completely damning, my months-long lackluster experiences with Windows 10 S suggest that the first year will be tough for many who do adopt this platform. As is so often the case with platform shifts, you’re best off sticking to new stuff and letting go of legacy, since much of the latter either won’t work, as noted here, or will run slowly.

In fact, the device has already proven valuable for consumer use: After joining the startup last year as chief medical officer, John Martin, a surgeon, was at a hospital testing the iQ. Having felt a lump in his throat for some time, he scanned his neck, which revealed a tumor that was then diagnosed as cancerous. He recently finished his first round of treatment.

From the materials to the kickstand, the Go feels, looks, and functions like its larger sibling, whose positive traits are well known. Microsoft’s main hardware product offers the best of both PC and tablet functionality through full Windows 10, a sharp high-resolution display, a built-in kickstand, and an optional keyboard and stylus peripheral, all of which are coming in the mix with the pint-size Surface Go. (The Windows 10 aspect is a little complicated, but more on that in a moment.)

Also, and we’re curious why Ulefone mentions this, the phone can cope with being immersed in a meter of concrete for 24 hours. Should you end up in concrete for a day, as happens to some unfortunate people, whether or not your phone will survive is probably the least of your concerns…

But now that the U.S. has been in Afghanistan for 17 years, what should we do? I am willing to go with Trump on Syria and Afghanistan, but as a Vietnam veteran, my personal experiences give me some sympathy with the concerns of General Mattis. We should not make withdrawal a total abandonment of allies—like the Kurds in Syria and the tribes of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan—as the U.S. Congress did the South Vietnamese and Cambodians in 1975. We should not keep troops there, but we must be demonstratively committed to aid them, if future circumstances warrant.

In addition to the built-in option, third-party devices allow Windows Hello to be added to other Windows 10 hardware.

Unicode support for platforms that don’t natively have it could be done quick and dirty using a simple substitution table to extended ASCII, or the hard way by having a full Unicode font and text rendering engine.
