“First users will be doctors and clinicians who are more comfortable with ultrasounds,” says Sanchez, now the startup’s chip design lead. “But, eventually, everyone from paramedics to nurses to doctors who have never used ultrasound will carry with them.”

Section 13. Severability. If any term, provision or paragraph of this Agreement is determined by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid or unenforceable for any reason, such determination shall be limited to the narrowest possible scope in order to preserve the enforceability of the remaining portions of the term, provision or paragraph, and such determination shall not affect the remaining terms, provisions or paragraphs of this Agreement, which shall continue to be given full force and effect.

In terms of specs, the mid-range Unihertz Atom measures in at just 96 x 45 x 18 mm and tips the scales at just 108g. At that scale, the forward-facing fingerprint scanner takes up around a third of the total width and the camera housing at the back takes up around half. The primary shooter is a 16-megapixel sensor with autofocus while the selfie camera is a fixed-focus 8-megapixel snapper. The display panel measures 2.45-inches with a resolution of 240*432 pixels, presenting users with a much-minimized full version of Android 8.1 Oreo. Pixel density falls in at around 203 PPI, giving a surprisingly clear image quality for the Atoms size. There’s no SD card storage expansion with the Atom but dual Nano SIM, in dual standby mode, can be accessed via the full-size SIM drawer. Storage is set at a healthy 64GB and a respectable 4GB of memory backs up the MediaTek P23 MT6763V/B octa-core SoC Unihertz included here. That’s four cores clocked at 1.51GHz and four further with a frequency of 2.0GHz for more demanding applications. A Mali-G71 GPU accompanies that processor.

The form factor is familiar. The actual computer is squeezed into an 8.9mm thick tablet with a kickstand out the back and a magnetically attached keyboard that sits up on an angle for better typing.

Ulefone did not reveal the full design of the Armor 6, but it did share a render in the provided video which kind of reveals what can we expect. It seems like the phone will include a rather wide notch at the top of the display, but its bezels will not be as thick as on some other rugged phones. The device will be made mostly out of metal, but it will offer some other materials to handle drops better, and the company also promises that the phone will be quite grippy. Ulefone says that the Armor 6 will be officially announced in January, but that the initial version will not support 5G. The 5G variant of the phone will go into testing in the second quarter of 2019 in collaboration with China Mobile, so it’s not clear when will it become official.

Broadly speaking, most rugged smartphones have to make trade-offs to reach their design goals, such as using an inelegant chassis, mediocre hardware inside, or rather ordinary displays. While the general reasons behind such design decisions are more or less obvious (e.g., keep their BOM costs and heat soak in check), there are many people who prefer to have a rugged smartphone without making quite so many compromises. The Ulefone Armor 6 in turn is looking to carve out a niche for itself in that market by offering a rugged design with above-average hardware.

In the past, the only interface between the physical world and the enterprise resource planning (ERP) or warehouse management system (WMS) of record has been through someone keying in data, scanning it, or maybe a materials handling system that scans, Wheeler explains. “We’re now moving toward technologies that sense the physical world directly and use analytics to make useful information out of data. It’s a real fundamental change,” he says.

"Most of the technologies that exist out there we can turn into something we can put into the patient’s hands, I think that [the challenge] is more about shrinking the technologies that exist. A lot of the things that a physician can do in a regular exam room we put in a Tricorder. Labs and radiology — that’s the difficult thing to shrink down into a Tricorder," Basil Leaf Technologies’ Charron says.

As the benchmarks revealed, the processor in this phone just doesn’t have the performance needed to drive it effectively. Some of the blame for this must be directed towards the PowerVR GE8100 GPU, which lacks punch when compared with the Mali G71 GPU that is paired with eight-core MediaTek processors.
