But Palm’s “phone companion” pitch quickly breaks down for exactly the same reason most people don’t have separate workday and weekend rides: Cost. The Palm is $349.99, then you have to pay Verizon every month to keep it on your plan. Even if the idea of a smartphone sidekick is appealing, that pricing is going to be prohibitive for a lot of people — though you have to begrudgingly respect the tech industry’s brazen attempt at getting people to buy not one but two smartphones. And while the Palm is a welcome experiment in a generally snoozy gadget category, it’s not likely to become a massive hit, even with a celeb endorsement from Stephen Curry.

For the time being, you can still pre-order one from Indiegogo for $399. Planet Computer plans to begin shipping devices to backers of the Indiegogo campaign this month, with retail availability to follow.

The contents of the box the WP1 ships in are fairly standard compared to other Chinese manufacturers. The handset itself comes with a screen protector pre-installed and there’s a wall adapter for Type C sockets as well as a USB Type-C cable for charging. A SIM needle is provided for swapping SIM cards while an OTG cable adapter for data transfers and another USB Type-C cable adapter for headphones are included. Finally, a starter guide for the smartphone rounds out the contents of the package.

One aspect we couldn’t test in practical terms was the IP68/IP69K rating. To achieve IP68 a phone must handle being submerged in a meter of water for 30 minutes. The Armor 3 goes much further than that, handling twice that depth for up to two hours!

I’m glad they’re trying new things too but it’s still way overpriced and setup to fail almost intentionally. Not even Microsoft is truly committed to Windows On ARM. Their Surface Go is further evidence of their lack of commitment to WoA. As Brad mentioned, you can get a comparably priced Surface device that has more features across the board including LTE support in some models and battery life that’s close enough to these devices. That’s just the more premium Surface devices, I’m sure there are OEM devices that also offer everything this has to offer but cheaper. Also there will be an LTE version of the Surface Go soon too. LTE and roughly 20% battery for $200 levels of performance is not going to get people to buy this device. It has to be priced competitively.
