“First users will be doctors and clinicians who are more comfortable with ultrasounds,” says Sanchez, now the startup’s chip design lead. “But, eventually, everyone from paramedics to nurses to doctors who have never used ultrasound will carry with them.”

I have a massive box containing many old palm PDAs. The software development for dragonball processors is quite fun and easy. I want to make a PDA with a dragonball processor, but I can’t find them for sale anywhere online. I like the case this project sets forth. It’s a shame palm PDAs have lost all of the developer resources.

It’s difficult to precisely identify the design influences that Poptel blended into the P8, as it doesn’t immediately look like any other phone in particular.

“This is a perfect solution,” Sanchez says. “Because it’s low cost, we can put in the hands of doctors in remote locations and instantly save thousands of lives. But, I know there will also be other areas in critical care and in emergency rooms around developed and developing worlds where people’s lives will be saved because of what we built. For me, that’s motivating.”

There was a time, back in the 1990s, when a PDA, or Personal Digital Assistant, was the height of mobile computing sophistication. These little hand-held touch-screen devices had no Internet connection, but had preloaded software to manage such things as your calendar and your contacts. [Brtnst] was introduced to PDAs through a Palm IIIc and fell in love with the idea, but became disillusioned with the Palm for its closed nature and lack of available software a couple of decades later.

Though it was made from outdated technology, the Game Boy and its descendants have often been used to test new tech. Heck, there was one GBA game with a solar panel in the cartridge. But more conducive to gaming was being able to track real-world motions in-game. This was first done in the Game Boy Color game Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble. The game involved tilting the Game Boy to move Kirby around the level and a built-in accelerometer could tell which way players tilted the handheld. This is pretty standard in mobile games now but Nintendo did it first.

Since the 1950s, lasers have done a fine job scanning one-dimensional bar codes. But, that’s about all they can do. Bryan Sellars, national product manager of presence detection for SICK, says an accelerating migration toward image capture and vision-based bar code reading offers significantly greater functionality. Concurrently, greater adoption of two-dimensional (2D) bar codes, which can encode more information in a smaller printed area and do not require consistent orientation, is underway.
