Even at this price, it is a struggle to recommend this phone because it seems underpowered, and several times during our testing it ran out of memory.

Plenty of Windows-based 2-in-1s and tablets have sought to emulate the Surface, but the device’s excellent kickstand has set the standard for Windows detachables, marrying the tablet and laptop device types effectively and allowing each mode to be deployed quickly depending on need. This is largely a positive, though as I’ll get into below, the kickstand doesn’t work quite as well at this size in all situations.

More than any work device I’ve tried in years, the Surface Book induced moments of sheer delight. I’m no Picasso, but clicking the pen and squiggling on the open windows tapped into such a lovely childhood sense of wonder. Even if I don’t often need to draw on my screen as a journalist, sometimes you simply want want to, and don’t bother because it’s too difficult.

For many, perhaps… but I have plenty of “pointerless” Debian systems and I just use keynav for keyboard-based pointer emulation in X. Takes some getting accustomed to, I’ll admit, but it does work.

In the next iteration of ORION, due out in 2019, UPSNav will dynamically adjust throughout the day to recalculate routes, considering factors like changing traffic conditions and the remaining deliveries and pick-up requests.

Combined with our pricier version of the Go, the cost of this review unit adds up to $678, and that’s before you get the optional Surface Pen ($99). Factoring in the Pen, the price point begins to spin out of the affordability-minded zone, which both makes the Go less of a bargain and changes which devices it’s competing with. Many 2-in-1 alternatives include the keyboard in the cost, so make sure to factor that in when shopping for the Surface Go.
