CDMA by any other name LOS ANGELES-The CDMA Development Group has said it wants to create a single name for the Code Division Multiple Access family of products. Wireless local loop, cellular and personal communications services are based on the same specification, said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. “There’s an enormous scale for CDMA but many don’t realize it’s all the same specification … We would have something that describes the technology.” The name will not conflict with individual service brands, but could be used in conjunction with carriers’ brand names, said LaForge. The CDG is expected to select a name before next May when the group holds its next World Congress. Whether carriers would use the CDMA name as part of their product branding is speculative. Using technology to market service has been an ongoing debate among carriers and wireless analysts. Many say customers don’t care about technology, only the service features that are offered. The modern supply chain is data hungry. To connect more devices in more places in real time, software and analytics applications are tasked with processing complex data streams into actionable information.

This probably isn’t a critical issue, but in the wake of the problems that Huawei is having in respect of compromised hardware, Chinese companies need to be squeaky clean for Western customers, and bundling a tool that Google rejects immediately as a security threat isn’t advisable.

A report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that the amount of money spent on augmented and virtual reality will double every year until it totals almost $215 billion globally in 2021. Based on the value AR brings to the supply chain, this number is not hard to imagine. As the technology evolves and becomes more widely adopted, there will also most likely be new applications for the technology that increase supply chain efficiency to an even greater degree.

What need is there for a barcode scanner on a modern smartphone that already has its own 16MP camera? This hardware is designed and optimized specifically for barcode scanning in a way that smartphone cameras are not. The module contains three windows for an illumination light (there’s nothing worse than a dimly lit barcode, right?), a laser to help you target, and the camera itself. It’s a compact module that makes the handheld scanners at retail stores look positively obese. In HP’s demonstrations, the scanner was incredibly fast — you just hold the button on the side of the case to activate the scanner, point it at your barcode, and *beep* you’re scanning.

Google Glass teased an interesting future, but failed to deliver on its promise. Today, Toshiba picks up where Glass left off, with a pair of Augmented Reality (AR) glasses powered by a mini Windows 10 PC.

This is the section where I’d normally post some benchmark results. I’m not going to do that here, because most common benchmarks aren’t available in the Microsoft Store and they aren’t really optimized to run on Windows 10 computers with ARM processors anyway.

The 720p webcam is pretty awful and does a horrible job in low-light environments, but that’s true of most laptop cameras.
