Smartphones are addictive machines meant to keep you looking at a screen as much as possible. They are very immersive. The minimalists among us may want to live with no digital distractions, but they also need smartphones to go about their lives. Those are the users Unihertz is trying to cater to.

The Toughbook FZ-L1, on the other hand, is a sturdy and durable Android tablet that is closer to what its moniker represents. It has been designed to meet the MIL-STD-810G standard, just like its smaller brother, it can survive drops up to 5 feet, and is IP67 dust and water-resistant.

OUKITEL is a relatively prominent smartphone manufacturer that excels at engineering budget-friendly devices that are rugged and solidly made. The battery capacity is also high, although that isn’t uncommon for devices from this company, and allows for hours upon hours of screen-on time. There are one or two minor quirks in the camera and materials used and this smartphone won’t work in every region. It is, nonetheless, worthy of consideration for anybody who needs a rugged device that’s solidly built.

But it wasn’t until I took my first tea break of the day that I realized how the laptop form factor is weirdly cumbersome. If I want to keep reading an article while putting the kettle on, I have to cradle my device like a cold, aluminum baby. Apple’s solution to this is Continuity: open your phone, call up the task switcher and a bar along the bottom invites you to transfer your current task onto your handheld device. It’s not exactly seamless, and the switchover does take some time. With the Surface Book, task-switching is more intuitive: press the keyboard button, wait a moment, and pull the screen off to take it with you.
