CDMA by any other name LOS ANGELES-The CDMA Development Group has said it wants to create a single name for the Code Division Multiple Access family of products. Wireless local loop, cellular and personal communications services are based on the same specification, said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. “There’s an enormous scale for CDMA but many don’t realize it’s all the same specification … We would have something that describes the technology.” The name will not conflict with individual service brands, but could be used in conjunction with carriers’ brand names, said LaForge. The CDG is expected to select a name before next May when the group holds its next World Congress. Whether carriers would use the CDMA name as part of their product branding is speculative. Using technology to market service has been an ongoing debate among carriers and wireless analysts. Many say customers don’t care about technology, only the service features that are offered. Scan recognizes all of the popular barcode types (UPC, EAN, and ISBN) and shows you pricing, reviews, and more. However, barcode scanning requires a high-resolution camera in order to work reliably as older devices don’t usually provide the resolution or focus required for barcode scanning.

But oh man, the reason you’re getting this is the keyboard. Now, I don’t find this the most awesome form factor, personally. At 6.7 inches, it’s a little bit too wide for me to comfortably thumb-type on. But folks with bigger hands will thrill to the scissor-like depth of the keys and the sculpted, laptop-like key edges. Chiclets these ain’t.

What this project shows is how it is now so much easier to make near commercial quality one-off projects from scratch. Accessible 3D printing has become so commonplace as to be mundane in our community, but it’s worth remembering just how much of a game-changer it has been.

Driving both trends, Sellars says, is the operational intelligence that image-based scanning and 2D bar codes provide. With laser-based scanning of one-dimensional bar codes, the only data collected is whether a code was properly read or not. If the trigger sensor went off but didn’t read, maybe a label is missing or the laser was looking for chocolate when presented with vanilla, but Sellars says the binary pass/fail feedback doesn’t lend itself to a quick and effective diagnosis.

The delivery app used with the scanners was conceived and programmed by the in-house team at Hermes. The centerpiece is a simply designed, multilingual interface that increases the ease-of-use compared to old devices.

The silver lining to the low storage speed is that the Kong 3 is remarkably frugal when it comes to power consumption: it managed nearly the same battery score as the S80, a phone with a 10,080mAh battery, whereas the King Kong 3 only has 6,000mAh of capacity.

What is a problem for Palm OS these days is Palm never supplied support for WPA2/PSK2 for any models with WiFi. There’s supposedly a near mythical ‘enterprise’ software addon for the T|X that includes WPA2/PSK2 support but I’ve not been able to find it anywhere. I have a LifeDrive (microdrive replaced with 4gb CF) and a Tungsten E2, plus my old Visor Platinum. IIRC Dmitry (the palm powerups guy) was working on a WPA2 addon for Palm OS but never released it.
