Traceability of ones and zeroes is great, but the latest scanners can capture image-based data about the quality of the product and the process.

Plenty of Windows-based 2-in-1s and tablets have sought to emulate the Surface, but the device’s excellent kickstand has set the standard for Windows detachables, marrying the tablet and laptop device types effectively and allowing each mode to be deployed quickly depending on need. This is largely a positive, though as I’ll get into below, the kickstand doesn’t work quite as well at this size in all situations.

Something about the Game Boy made it a breeding ground for weird and wacky peripherals. Maybe it was the ubiquity and portability, who knows? But one of the strangest peripherals, without a doubt, was the Pocket Sonar. Made by Bandai in 1998, the Pocket Sonar was a fishing accessory that turned the Game Boy into a radar. The foam buoy worked for depths of up to 65 feet. A few mini-games were also included, but the Pocket Sonar was really meant as a fishing tool, not a game. Having never been released outside Japan, we don’t know how well it really worked.

It’s connected, of course. There’s GSM, LTE, and CDMA connectivity, making it, in theory, compatible with all four US carriers, as long as Sprint and Verizon don’t pull shenanigans and block it. You can make calls using a speakerphone mode or a Bluetooth headset, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera supports video chat. The battery is 4220mAh.

UPS has invested aggressively in its Global Smart Logistics Network, which relies on data, analytics and innovative technology to pioneer customer solutions, boost service levels and generate operational efficiencies.

Switching on the Surface Book for the first time makes you realize you’re in for a treat. Apple has long touted the benefits of having one company produce both the hardware and software, and it’s clear Microsoft has been listening. The facial recognition scanner takes a shot of your face, the whole setup process uses the microphones to register your voice, and the whole machine is ready to go with minimal effort. Again, the Surface line is meant to show other manufacturers what’s possible: face scanning forms part of Windows Hello, a feature that other companies can build into their own machines. Face recognition is fast and hassle-free, although it does mean having to stare intently at my laptop after opening it up.

The dynaEdge PC can also be used as a traditional Windows 10 Pro desktop by connecting it to a standard display.

There’s nothing revolutionary here, but this phone offers a solid design made with good quality components and a decent enough spec. The dual SIM with microSD card capability and global channel support makes it ideal for any international adventure holiday.

Apparently no one mentioned OpenMoko either, maybe because it (the OpenMoko GTA01 and GTA02) has integrated cellular telephony capability.

Microsoft has been quietly laying the groundwork to make Windows cool again for years. Windows 10, launched in 2015, is a strong culmination of everything the company has learned so far about how people want to use a computer. The Surface line of Microsoft-designed computers, aimed at showing the rest of the market the sort of groundbreaking designs that could run Windows, picked up steam with the launch of the Surface Book in 2016. And while Apple has steadfastly refused to merge the MacBook Pro and the iPad, Microsoft now offers a laptop that transforms into a tablet with the press of a keyboard button. The keyboard half houses batteries, ports, a touchpad and graphics processor, while the screen half houses the rest of the machine.

On the hardware front, Unihertz has done an exceptional job ensuring this smartphone will be durable. That’s due in large part to the size of this gadget. To begin with, it is noticeably thicker than other smartphones but not to such a degree that it’s difficult to hold. A fair amount of that heft is because the components have been squeezed into such a small frame but also because the outer protective coating is so thick. The panels, edges, and corners feature extra grip to make it more difficult to drop too. Meanwhile, the small screen size and use of an unspecified version of Gorilla Glass mean that there’s not enough surface area to really bend or twist. The entire build brings to mind the original candy-bar style Nokias from the 1990s and early-2000s. It really does just feel indestructible because of how compact everything is and might even pose as much a risk to bare feet as a Lego brick if the company had used harder materials and sharper edges.

The Unihertz Atom is a phone you don’t really want to keep using, but that is the whole point of it. You do what you have to do and get on with your life. It is nonaddictive by nature.
