Of course, that means that there is a laundry list of trade-offs and only a relatively small niche audience who the Atom might appeal to in the long-term. Throughout our time with this handset, the novelty of that didn’t really wear off and using the phone was plenty of fun thanks to well-optimized inputs and generally great performance — for what this is. But problems did arise in terms of day-to-day use, admittedly mostly because some text is difficult to read without brilliant eyesight. Furthermore, audio quality isn’t awesome and the camera suffers some issues. That does not, however, mean that this device is any less worthy of consideration. For a number of users and lifestyles, in fact, the Unihertz Atom will be a perfect fit precisely because of its small size and durability.

And, aside from managing consultants’ workloads better, Tricorders could potentially make a much more significant contribution to medicine. Imagine an area — be it in rural Europe or rural Africa — where population density is lower, and the provision of medical care is even more sparse. Instead of having to drive for hours or even days to find a doctor the next time you take sick, a Tricorder in the home or local clinic could help you to decide whether you need to get to the nearest A&E or take a couple of aspirin and sleep off the fever.

Other features include a 4,220 mAh battery, two USB Type-C ports, a microSD card slot, a 3.5mm audio jack, stereo speakers, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, and a 5MP front-facing camera.

The laptop also supports quick charging: Plug it in for 15 minutes and you should get a few hours of run time.

In short: the Palm Phone is better, mostly because of design and the much better screen. I would gladly pay the extra $90 (plus $10 extra monthly fee) for it if I wanted a secondary phone and was with Verizon.  Those that don’t fit the requirements can go with the next best thing in tiny smartphones: the Unihertz Atom.
