In less specialized use, I found the Surface Go pleasant to tote. I hardly notice it in the crook of my arm or one hand while buzzing around our office and taking it on the train. It shines in any of these on-the-go circumstances, so if you find yourself hopping from meeting to meeting and spending a lot of time away from your desk, this may be a great partner. On a larger scale, the low cost may be especially well suited to the bulk-purchase scenarios I mentioned.

This lag makes taking pictures a rather haphazard exercise, as the framing of the captured image rarely matches the image which was on-screen when a snap was initiated.

The trackpad is equally good. It’s pretty big, has a smooth, precise surface and a solid click to it, as well as plenty of options to customise the experience. But there’s also a ThinkPad stalwart in the form of the little red nipple TrackPoint between the G, H and B keys, and three mouse buttons between the spacebar and the trackpad. I found little use for them except when on a train where the end of the keyboard was pressed up into my gut by the zero legroom blocking the trackpad.

The frame encompassing that, complete with headphone jack and USB Type-C port, is built of thick rubbery polycarbonates and plastics for added durability and only available in one color – Space Gray with red accents. That aids with the handset’s IP6G ruggedization rating. A programmable ‘PTT’ button is also built along the right-hand edge just below the power button and just opposite the volume buttons. A lanyard slot is built into the lower-back portion of the Atom for additional security against misplacing the tiny device. The Atom’s charging port is used both for powering up the 2000mAh battery and for OTG functionality while the headphone jack doubles as a receiver for FM radio. A single speaker can be found on the rear panel. Unihertz sets the price for this mid-range device at just $259.

The Surface Go is, like the Surface Pro, just a Windows tablet at heart, with optional accessories such as a keyboard cover turning it into a laptop, if you like. The main tablet measures 0.33 by 9.6 by 6.98 inches (HWD) and weighs just 1.15 pounds, a highly portable slate made of quality magnesium and just a few feathers above the weight of that 1-pound tablet icon, the Apple iPad (2017). (As a point of comparison for the design, it feels a bit like holding a squarer Nintendo Switch in its size and build.)

A custom camera app has three basic modes: picture, video and panorama. Picture mode has HDR, self-timer and the ability to capture sound when taking snaps. Sound capture is also available in panorama, and that mode has a simple but effective guide system for aligning the images that generated some excellent results.
