The design is a breath of fresh air in a crowded rugged smartphone market and it will be a great entry point if you’re new to the Android platform. That is because the most-outstanding aspect with it will surely be the pricing.

The Toughbook FZ-T1 is slim, extremely durable and sports a 5-inch display. This form factor, and the fact that it can make calls, makes it closer to a smartphone than a tablet – but Panasonic still insists on calling it a ‘Toughbook’. It was launched globally back in June this year. The 5-inch display has a resolution of 1280×720 pixels, has 10-point multitouch support along with rain sensing, glove touch mode and can accept a passive pen input. The FZ-T1 runs Android 8.1 Oreo and has an integrated barcode scanner which is capable of scanning barcodes.

I suspect folks who just view one website at a time or just use the computer for writing, watching videos, or performing other one-at-a-time tasks will both find the computer to be more responsive and to offer longer battery life. But in my tests, about 10-12 hours of continuous usage seems pretty typical.

Its 2,000mAh battery is small for today’s standards. The phone also isn’t as resource intensive, though. They small screen, lackluster definition, and modest specs should keep it alive for longer. That’s all theory, and I wasn’t exactly impressed with this phone’s battery life.

That’s about where benefits end, though. Typing is also cumbersome with the Palm companion, even if not as much, thanks to the extra finger room you get from the 3.3-inch display. The battery is a joke at 800mAh. The camera is also bad.
