I did run some web-based benchmarks using the Edge web browser. The results weren’t great… and they also deviated pretty significantly from results that I’ve seen posted by other websites. So I’m not sure that web-based bechmarks such as Sunspider, Octane, Speedometer, or Kraken provide an accurate, consistent way to measure performance of Windows 10 on ARM devices.

Windows 10 users were given another biometric authentication method earlier this year: palm vein scanning. 

I have no need for PTT communications, so it’s good the phone has an option for changing the button’s functionality. You can choose to launch any app with the PTT button. I picked the camera, but any app of your choice will work the same. The one downside to switching the button’s functionality is that it won’t launch any other app with the screen off (it does with Zello).

Driving both trends, Sellars says, is the operational intelligence that image-based scanning and 2D bar codes provide. With laser-based scanning of one-dimensional bar codes, the only data collected is whether a code was properly read or not. If the trigger sensor went off but didn’t read, maybe a label is missing or the laser was looking for chocolate when presented with vanilla, but Sellars says the binary pass/fail feedback doesn’t lend itself to a quick and effective diagnosis.

As an Android phone, the Armor 3 is a decent performer and generally responsive. The Oreo operating system is mostly vanilla, although it has some bundled tools such as a flashlight, FM radio and a Toolbox application that has numerous functions which we’ve seen on other Android 8.1 installations.

Presented today, the device has not yet had its price or availability officially confirmed, is more likely to be arriving early next year in the Chinese market. For now, the device neither does have an official price.

One of the things that’s sacrificed in most PC tablets is battery life. Lenovo quotes “more-than-all-day” battery life of nine-and-a-half hours, but the reality is the ThinkPad X1 Tablet lasts only around seven hours between charges. That was with the “Better battery life” power setting active, word processing in Typora, browsing in Chrome, using Nextgen reader, some image editing in Affinity Photo and lots of email in Microsoft Mail.

In the meantime, UPSNav marks a "significant update" to UPS’s On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation (ORION) platform, which determines the optimal order for local package car drivers to make deliveries and pickups, the company said. The upgrade allows ORION to give drivers directions to all those stops in precise detail – even to loading docks and receiving areas that may be located on opposite sides of a building’s main entrance, UPS said.

Last year the company also introduced Windows 10 S… a version of the operating system that takes a less-is-more approach by restricting users from running applications downloaded from sources other than the Microsoft Store. The idea is to offer better performance, improved security, and automatic updates… much like Google’s Chrome OS. It’s not surprising that Windows 10 S was originally targeted at the education market, which is currently dominated by Chromebooks.

There’s also a fingerprint scanner, which has a slightly odd combination of tapping and swiping for registering your fingerprint, but works well in day-to-day operation. I didn’t end up using it at the desk as the face recognition worked so well, but it was useful for unlocking the tablet when handheld in portrait orientation, and the more biometric options the better.
