"For decades, Toshiba has been instrumental in streamlining the operations of businesses around the world through cutting-edge, mobile computing technologies. Much like how laptops have increased office productivity by enabling workers to take their PCs with them anywhere they go, we believe that wearable PCs combined with smart glasses will take on-the-job productivity to a whole new dimension," said Carl Pinto, vice president, marketing and engineering, Client Solutions Division, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc.
This week, however, Microsoft finally published a more complete list of the limitations of Windows 10 on ARM. And that word—limitations—is interesting. This isn’t how Windows 10 on ARM differs from Windows 10 on x86-based systems. It’s how it’s more limited.
For connectivity, the Unihertz Atom features all modern features that should be in any Android handset. NFC is available for tap-to-pay. Both Bluetooth 4.2 A-GPS and GLONASS ensure that some level of connectivity can be had outside of dual-band Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi hotspot features. Mobile data is fairly robust, as outlined below, and will work with either AT&T or T-Mobile in the US. We were connected over T-Mobile through our MVNO and saw no issues with the 4G network in our area. No latency or problems were present in any of the other technologies either and a phone call showed that the earpiece volume and quality in the Atom were well above serviceable. This particular smartphone is designed to be, for lack of a better term, a phone first and foremost.
Forum member WG91 notes that there’s also a pre-rooted, verified boot image available for download, as well as bootloader and kernel source code.
Today’s productivity apps are ubiquitous in the office, but back in the 90s, you needed a PDA (personal digital assistant) for that stuff. Some darn fool thought the Game Boy was perfect for such a device.
Windows on Arm is interesting, especially where their hybrid dynarec + native dll X86 emulation is concerned. I’d be interested in seeing windows 10 arm or IoT on this device as well at a later date. Not sure what performance would look like for non native binaries, but a triple boot in the pocket would be pretty cool. GPD pocket is ok, Im really not sure where the X27 sits against the 8750. It would be nice to see some benches on both sides.
“Biometric fingerprint scanning is prevalent in the enterprise, but the issue is that it’s not readily used,” Moorhead said. Every major vendor has systems using Windows Hello, according to Moorhead, but market penetration is much lower than needed to start the process of replacing passwords for all Windows 10 users.
It’s unfortunately a relatively big price jump to get this SSD-equipped model, but RAM is pricey these days and SSD is simply not inexpensive technology. The storage capacity takes a nice bump, though, so you can also store more files and your system will load faster. A 128GB drive isn’t a ton of storage, but for the types of tasks the Surface Go is built for, it’s a fitting capacity. On the whole, I think the $399 price point of the Surface Go is one of the stronger selling points, so there’s less head-turning value in hearing "$550 Surface." But the speedier storage and more-standard amount of memory are undeniably nice to have if you’ll also lean on this machine as a frequent work companion.
Perhaps the most interesting use of the Tricorder takes us right back to the device’s sci-fi conception. Should humans ever attempt more long-distance space travel, a Tricorder would be a must: a manned mission to Mars could see astronauts travel for weeks or months without access to the full repertoire of medical support.

This lag makes taking pictures a rather haphazard exercise, as the framing of the captured image rarely matches the image which was on-screen when a snap was initiated.
