I averaged about three hours of screen-on time. Overall the phone would last me all day on a single charge. By the time I went to sleep the phone was under the 20 percent mark, and I wasn’t even using it that much. Battery life is generally OK, but I expected more.

For connectivity, the Unihertz Atom features all modern features that should be in any Android handset. NFC is available for tap-to-pay. Both Bluetooth 4.2 A-GPS and GLONASS ensure that some level of connectivity can be had outside of dual-band Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi hotspot features. Mobile data is fairly robust, as outlined below, and will work with either AT&T or T-Mobile in the US. We were connected over T-Mobile through our MVNO and saw no issues with the 4G network in our area. No latency or problems were present in any of the other technologies either and a phone call showed that the earpiece volume and quality in the Atom were well above serviceable. This particular smartphone is designed to be, for lack of a better term, a phone first and foremost.

We’ve reviewed Cat phones before, most recently the flagship Cat S61, which packs a thermal imaging camera, an air quality sensor, and some other specialist tools for professionals, but it costs $1,000. The Cat S48c is a simpler prospect, but also much cheaper at $480 plus tax. And on top of that we have two incredibly mediocre cameras. Using them isn’t a good experience, as for some curious reason the refresh loop for showing a still image isn’t smooth and presents a slideshow-like update. Very off-putting.

The left side has a PTT (push-to-talk) button for use with a walkie-talkie option, and surprisingly no SIM card slot. It took us some time to work out where the SIM slot was, the clue being the small Torx screwdriver included in the extensive library of accessories for this phone.

The Game Boy’s portability was a major part of its success, but we doubt Nintendo thought it could be this portable. In 1993, Aleksandr Serebrov took his Game Boy with him into space. He was on his way to the Mir space station and wanted something to do in his off time. Because of weight issues, Serebrov could only take one game. He chose Tetris, an appropriate game for the place and time. His Game Boy spent 196 days in space and orbited the Earth over 3000 times. It and Serebrov’s copy of Tetris were later sold at auction for $1220.
