Handhelds were seen as something of a novelty back in the early 90s. There hadn’t been a dedicated handheld console like the Game Boy before. Most handhelds were simple and cheap, only playing a single game. Nintendo wanted to make the transition as seamless as possible. For that reason, the Game Boy has the same control scheme as the NES controller. A D-pad, an A & B button, and start and select buttons. The idea was that veteran NES Players could pick up Game Boys and play no problem. Given the Game Boy’s success, I’d say it worked.

Speaking of phones, this thing has the kind of hardware you’d expect from a phone, not a notebook. It sports a 6 inch, 2160 x 1080 pixel display, a MediaTek Helio X27 deca-core processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Now, mind you, the flagship Surface Pro isn’t ideal used on your lap, either, but its wider body can fit across your legs much more naturally, even if you have to be careful not to move too suddenly while balancing the kickstand. With the Surface Go, the lesser body/kickstand width means you have to keep your legs close together, or else it will fall between them. That arrangement is serviceable on my lap for a quick session, but much less so for a long train ride, as it requires you to sit upright and still, and strain your neck a bit. And while the device is nicely made and feels sturdy, it’s not a ruggedized tablet you’ll feel comfortable seeing clatter to the floor.

There are two other aspects to the P8 that we need to mention for anyone considering a purchase. The first is that while this phone came with a relatively unadulterated version of Android Oreo 8.1 installed, when we got the phone, the latest security update was dated June 2018.

The Elite x3 is a phone for business, according to HP, and the addition of a new barcode scanner case unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 expands the feature set for businesses. It’s a simple accessory built on the legacy of decades of barcode scanners, and it brings that old-school tech to a decidedly new-school format.

We are getting close, but what I would like to see is a device you can use as your phone, take with you and plug into the dash to use in the car, and pull out and take to the office. Just attach power and HDMI, and off you go from work to car to home and back again. In this dream there is a universal connector that can actually supply power and HDMI so you can plop into universal power ports (leave the cables at home).

Given the asking price we weren’t expecting the Kong 3 to be revolutionary in any noticeable way, but it’s not junk by any standards.
