Pokémon was a massive phenomenon when it hit the Game Boy in 1998. The mega-popular monster-catching RPG seemed like it was made for the handheld. And in some ways, it was. Pokémon designer Satoshi Tajiri liked how the Game Boy Link Cable connected two of the consoles together.

64-bit apps will not work. Yes, Windows 10 on ARM can run Windows desktop applications. But it can only run 32-bit (x86) desktop applications, not 64-bit (x64) applications. (The documentation doesn’t note this, but support for x64 apps is planned for a future release.)
Panasonic’s second offering is the Toughbook FZ-L1 which is a professional grade tablet, and launched globally in July this year. It is available in WiFi only for indoor operations as well as aone with voice and data capability for field workers. The FZ-L1 has a bigger 7-inch display with 1280×720 pixel resolution. Industry 4.0 is an expansive concept, but it shouldn’t be intimidating. The solution could be something as simple as a photo eye that can monitor its own dirtiness and request a cleaning. That’s Industry 4.0, Sellars says, because it goes beyond ones and zeroes to the realm of situational awareness. Decentralizing this sort of awareness is another element of Industry 4.0, where logic is distributed instead of burdening the programmable logic controller (PLC) with all the data about whether a camera is dirty. The camera is taking care of that on its own, adjusting its parameters as less overall light is detected, and immediately reverting back to initial settings after a cleaning.
“Just one!” I promised. He inclined his head toward the back of the store, in the direction of the “Employees only” bathroom.
Something about the Game Boy made it a breeding ground for weird and wacky peripherals. Maybe it was the ubiquity and portability, who knows? But one of the strangest peripherals, without a doubt, was the Pocket Sonar. Made by Bandai in 1998, the Pocket Sonar was a fishing accessory that turned the Game Boy into a radar. The foam buoy worked for depths of up to 65 feet. A few mini-games were also included, but the Pocket Sonar was really meant as a fishing tool, not a game. Having never been released outside Japan, we don’t know how well it really worked.
A report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that the amount of money spent on augmented and virtual reality will double every year until it totals almost $215 billion globally in 2021. Based on the value AR brings to the supply chain, this number is not hard to imagine. As the technology evolves and becomes more widely adopted, there will also most likely be new applications for the technology that increase supply chain efficiency to an even greater degree.
On the hardware side, the device could also do with some refinement. There’s a weird wedge-shaped gap when the lid is closed due to the metal hinge, and while I don’t really care about it, practically everyone else I’ve shown the laptop to has pointed it out unprompted. The potential for bric-a-brac in my rucksack to mess up the screen means I’d have to keep it in a separate case. This is pretty much the only gripe I have on the hardware side, though, and that’s far better than having a dust-allergic keyboard.
In terms of extras, Unihertz also includes a Cell Broadcast app for checking emergency alerts in the user’s immediate vicinity and an SOS app for setting emergency contacts and quickly sending out emergency calls, messages, or ‘SOS’ including location data. Similarly, a TrackBack application is installed out-of-the-box that enables accurate tracking of where a user has traveled and how far. That would be useful in emergency situations as well as tracking distance for comparison with the included pedometer app. Zello is included for walkie-talkie functions as well as an FM radio and the former of those is initially linked to the above-mentioned PTT button. Last but not least the Atom includes a ‘Toolbox’ that contains various useful DIY and measurement apps. Of course, a flashlight, compass, alarm, and camera-based magnifier are part of that package. But there’s also a sound measurement app to gauge the level of noise in a given environment, a bubble level, a height measurement tool, a picture hanging level, a digital plumb bob, and a protractor. Finally, the camera can be used as a heart monitor in a pinch and the app for that is included in the Toolbox.
