Handheld Group has launched the Nautiz X9, an ultra-rugged enterprise handheld built for fieldwork in challenging outdoor or industrial environments. It can be used as a mobile computer, data collector or field controller, the company said.

But here Lenovo departs from the winning minimalist Surface 2-in-1 formula, bringing ThinkPad staples such as a pointing nipple, trackpad buttons, bucket-shaped keyboard keys and optional road-warrior appealing 4G.

As if to underline that point, the other major weakness of this design is the screen. It isn’t a high resolution, doesn’t have a strong color palette, and is difficult to read in bright light.

The best aspect of this design is that for a rugged phone it isn’t overly large or heavy, but as we get into the specifications, you might conclude that those positive notes are outweighed by other less desirable features.

I mean, it’s a 3.1 pound fanless laptop, which is pretty nice. But for about the same price as an Asus NovGo, you can pick up a 2.8 pound Microsoft Surface laptop with a higher-resolution display, a faster Intel Core M3-7Y30 processor, a faster SSD, and significantly better all-around performance.

As befits a potentially game-changing and technologically-complex device, the Tricorder concept had caught Google’s eye. Back in 2014, the head of life sciences at what was then Google X, the company’s moonshot division, announced a cancer-detection system that would lay the foundations for the creation of a Tricorder. The system that Dr Andrew Conrad announced aimed to use magnetic nanoparticles that would attach themselves to cancer particles; a separate wrist-worn device would measure the particles to detect cancer. The system would over time form part of a real-life Tricorder, Conrad said.

While the integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics card may be the weakest point of the X1 Tablet, the machine managed to handle some enormous 23,000-pixel wide images without breaking too much of a sweat.

The model Asus loaned me has a list price of $699, although it’s often available for less than that. It’s the most affordable Windows on ARM device to ship to date, but it’s also one of the biggest: the notebook measures about 0.6 inches thick and weighs about 3.1 pounds. It has a fanless design, but it’s not the same kind of thin-and-light machine I think of when I think of ARM-powered computers. It feels more like a full-fledged laptop.
